Dear Your Excellency,

Right to Freedom of Expression in Iran

I write on behalf of the NASUWT, The Teachers’ Union in the United Kingdom,

We understand that over 2000 people have been arrested by the authorities in Iran, including an estimated 100 university students who have been particularly targeted by the regime.   Hundreds more have been injured and at least twenty reported killed by security forces.

We  would  remind  you  that  Iran  is  obliged  under  Article  19  of  the  International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights to guarantee the right to freedom of expression.

We therefore call on your government to put an end to the arrests and repression of labour activists in Iran. We further request the immediate and unconditional freedom of all jailed labour activists and political prisoners in Iran.

I would be grateful if you could confirm that you have passed our concerns to your government, and we look forward to receiving a response as a matter of urgency.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Keates (Ms)
